Japanese for Healthcare Professionals

Japanese for Healthcare Professionals
By:Shigeru Osuka
Published on 2015-09-15 by Tuttle Publishing

The only book of its kind in English, Japanese for Healthcare Professionals is a proficiency-based conversation textbook offering a complete Japanese language course that teaches Japanese grammar along with the vocabulary of medical care. With nearly three million Japanese tourists visiting the United States last year, and another five hundred thousand expatriates residing in the US and other English-speaking countries, it is inevitable that many Japanese speakers find themselves in need of healthcare but unable to communicate. Important highlights of this book are: Accompanying MP3 Audio Disc. No prior knowledge of Japanese necessary. For all professionals seeking to communicate in healthcare situations. Includes an English–Japanese dictionary of medical terms, a glossary of common complaints, and a sample bilingual medical questionnaire. Japanese for Healthcare Professionals offers a complete language course for classroom study or independent learners that teaches Japanese grammar along with the medical Japanese vocabulary. The chapters cover every step of a patient's interaction with care providers, from appointments and admissions to the physical examination, symptoms and illnesses, diagnosis, treatment, instructions to the patient, discharge, and follow–up. Chapters are devoted to the major branches of medicine as well as dentistry and to the corresponding bodily systems. There are also chapters on anatomy, infection and disease, and visits to the pharmacy. Each chapter follows a natural progression designed to help the learner comprehend the new material and acquire the language as effortlessly as possible. Each includes: basic Japanese vocabulary, a situational dialogue, Japanese grammar points and key Japanese language and culture notes, exercises and practice drills, and a quiz to sharpen comprehension. The culture and language notes seek to help the provider understand better a Japanese patient's cultural framework and patterns of belief, as well as the |un-traslatable| meaning conveyed by certain idioms. The accompanying MP3 audio disc tries ties in core parts of each chapter, allowing learners to practice their spoken language skills outside a classroom setting. The book also includes thirty illustrations to help with vocabulary acquisition, a pronunciation guide, an English–Japanese dictionary of medical terms, a glossary of Japanese expressions for common complaints, a sample bilingual medical questionnaire, and answers to the quizzes. Emphasizing the learner's practical use of the Japanese language for healthcare settings and the importance of culture in understanding, Japanese for Healthcare Professionals reflects the national standards in foreign–language education set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign languages (ACTFL).

How Doctors Think

How Doctors Think
By:Jerome Groopman
Published on 2008-03-12 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

On average, a physician will interrupt a patient describing her symptoms within eighteen seconds. In that short time, many doctors decide on the likely diagnosis and best treatment. Often, decisions made this way are correct, but at crucial moments they can also be wrong -- with catastrophic consequences. In this myth-shattering book, Jerome Groopman pinpoints the forces and thought processes behind the decisions doctors make. Groopman explores why doctors err and shows when and how they can -- with our help -- avoid snap judgments, embrace uncertainty, communicate effectively, and deploy other skills that can profoundly impact our health. This book is the first to describe in detail the warning signs of erroneous medical thinking and reveal how new technologies may actually hinder accurate diagnoses. How Doctors Think offers direct, intelligent questions patients can ask their doctors to help them get back on track. Groopman draws on a wealth of research, extensive interviews with some of the country’s best doctors, and his own experiences as a doctor and as a patient. He has learned many of the lessons in this book the hard way, from his own mistakes and from errors his doctors made in treating his own debilitating medical problems. How Doctors Think reveals a profound new view of twenty-first-century medical practice, giving doctors and patients the vital information they need to make better judgments together.

Paths to Asian Medical Knowledge
By:Charles M. Leslie
Published on 1992 by Univ of California Press

Like its classic predecessor, Asian Medical Systems, Paths to Asian Medical Knowledge significantly expands the study of Asian medicine. These essays ask how patients and practitioners know what they know--what evidence of disease or health they consider convincing and what cultural traditions and symbols guide their thinking. Whether discussing Japanese anatomy texts, Islamic humoralism, Ayurvedic clinical practice, or a variety of other subjects, the authors offer an exciting range of information and suggest new theoretical avenues for medical anthropology.

The Checklist Manifesto

The Checklist Manifesto
By:Atul Gawande
Published on 2010-04-01 by Metropolitan Books

The New York Times bestselling author of Better and Complications reveals the surprising power of the ordinary checklist We live in a world of great and increasing complexity, where even the most expert professionals struggle to master the tasks they face. Longer training, ever more advanced technologies—neither seems to prevent grievous errors. But in a hopeful turn, acclaimed surgeon and writer Atul Gawande finds a remedy in the humblest and simplest of techniques: the checklist. First introduced decades ago by the U.S. Air Force, checklists have enabled pilots to fly aircraft of mind-boggling sophistication. Now innovative checklists are being adopted in hospitals around the world, helping doctors and nurses respond to everything from flu epidemics to avalanches. Even in the immensely complex world of surgery, a simple ninety-second variant has cut the rate of fatalities by more than a third. In riveting stories, Gawande takes us from Austria, where an emergency checklist saved a drowning victim who had spent half an hour underwater, to Michigan, where a cleanliness checklist in intensive care units virtually eliminated a type of deadly hospital infection. He explains how checklists actually work to prompt striking and immediate improvements. And he follows the checklist revolution into fields well beyond medicine, from disaster response to investment banking, skyscraper construction, and businesses of all kinds. An intellectual adventure in which lives are lost and saved and one simple idea makes a tremendous difference, The Checklist Manifesto is essential reading for anyone working to get things right.

Evidence, Ethos and Experiment

Evidence, Ethos and Experiment
By:P. Wenzel Geissler,Catherine Molyneux
Published on 2011-09-30 by Berghahn Books

Medical research has been central to biomedicine in Africa for over a century, and Africa, along with other tropical areas, has been crucial to the development of medical science. At present, study populations in Africa participate in an increasing number of medical research projects and clinical trials, run by both public institutions and private companies. Global debates about the politics and ethics of this research are growing and local concerns are prompting calls for social studies of the |trial communities| produced by this scientific work. Drawing on rich, ethnographic and historiographic material, this volume represents the emergent field of anthropological inquiry that links Africanist ethnography to recent concerns with science, the state, and the culture of late capitalism in Africa.

Bandolier's Little Book of Making Sense of the Medical Evidence

Bandolier's Little Book of Making Sense of the Medical Evidence
By:R. Andrew Moore,Henry J. McQuay
Published on 2006 by Oxford University Press, USA

This easy to read pocketbook, written by world leaders in the field of evidence-based pain treatments, acts as a simple guide for people who wish to make sense of evidence in a healthcare setting and who want to avoid being misled by faulty evidence. It provides practical guidelines on how to make sense of and interpret the evidence that is available, with information on how to avoid straying beyond evidence into conjecture, supposition, and wishful thinking. It covers size, trial design, harm as well as benefit, and health economics and management evidence. 'Bandolier's Little Book of Making Sense of the Medical Evidence' has not been written as a comprehensive manual for those who want to do a systematic review or a meta-analysis, nor as a statistical or methodological textbook for students. Its origins lie in lectures for medical students, healthcare professionals from a variety of settings, and journalists. This book is a summary of the tools that Bandolier uses to assess evidence, to be able to distinguish good evidence from bad. It will be an invaluable resource for university course and GP tutors, family doctors, hospital consultants involved in research, pharmacists, and anyone interested in evidence-based health care.

Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine

Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine

Published on 1995 by Paradigm Publications

|Publication of an English translation of |Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine| is an important step toward assuring that a process of serious questioning will take place and that the medical dialogue between East and West will have lasting importance and conscious direction. Only accurate information will allow the beginnings of an American or European version of Oriental medicine. A new variant of Oriental medicine must be based on careful and thoughtful study of primary sources, on reflection, and on information. Otherwise, it will be a mutant based on fantasy.
