Difficult Conversations in Medicine

Difficult Conversations in Medicine
By:Elisabeth Macdonald
Published on 2004 by OUP Oxford

In all branches of medicine, effective communication between health care professionals and patients, families and carers is essential to ensure first-class treatment. Increasing public awareness of health issues and the ready availability of health information have lead the public to be morewidely informed about common conditions and the treatments available. Patients therefore attend a medical consultation better informed so the need for improved communication skills is even greater. This book aims to demystify the 'doctor-patient' relationship in order that patients and potentialpatients can more easily understand the information which doctors are seeking to convey as well as gaining some insight into the difficulties of communication from a doctor's perspective. Some conversations require specialised skills. Talking to people with difficult personalities and poor social skills can be challenging. Strong emotions of anger, frustration or distress need sensitive handling and particular age groups call on styles of address appropriate to their particularneeds. Using the expertise of experienced doctors from many specialties this book covers not only the theory behind good communication skills but also gives a wealth of practical advice. The book covers ethical and legal issues, planning difficult conversations, the patient's and doctor's perspectives, issues surrounding special groups such as children and the elderly, and conversations with patients from different cultural backgrounds. Outlines of possible clinical cases posingspecific problems are included with guidance on how to handle them.

Medical and Veterinary Entomology

Medical and Veterinary Entomology
By:D. S. Kettle
Published on 1984-01 by Routledge

The first edition of this book, published in 1984, established itself internationally as a standard text in medical and veterinary entomology. This new edition retains the same overall aims and structure but has been thoroughly revised to take account of new advances in the subject. The main focus of the book is on the general biology of insects and the Acari (mites and ticks) of medical and veterinary importance, together with brief descriptions of their taxonomy and of the treatment of diseases they cause. The book consists of 32 chapters and is divided into three parts: the first provides a general introduction to the classification, structure and function of the relevant insects and Acari; the second covers, in 17chapters, the main groups of insects and acarines of medical and veterinary importance, from the Culicidae (mosquitoes) to the Ixodidae (hard ticks); part three then provides an overview of those diseases of which the pathogens are transmitted by insects or acarines.

Can Medicine Be Cured?

Can Medicine Be Cured?
By:Seamus O'Mahony
Published on 2019-02-07 by Head of Zeus Ltd

A fierce, honest, elegant and often hilarious debunking of the great fallacies that drive modern medicine. 'A deeply fascinating and rousing book' Mail on Sunday. 'What makes this book a delightful, if unsettling read, is not just O'Mahony's scholarly and witty prose, but also his brutal honesty' The Times. Seamus O'Mahony writes about the illusion of progress, the notion that more and more diseases can be 'conquered' ad infinitum. He punctures the idiocy of consumerism, the idea that healthcare can be endlessly adapted to the wishes of individuals. He excoriates the claims of Big Science, the spending of vast sums on research follies like the Human Genome Project. And he highlights one of the most dangerous errors of industrialized medicine: an over-reliance on metrics, and a neglect of things that can't easily be measured, like compassion.

Biopsychosocial Medicine

Biopsychosocial Medicine
By:Peter White
Published on 2005 by Oxford University Press, USA

To what extent do social factors such as stress cause physical diseases? How do psychological and social factors contribute to the healing process? The biopsychosocial model is an approach to medicine which stresses the importance of a holistic approach. It considers factors outside the biological process of illness when trying to understand health and disease. In this approach, a person's social context and psychological well-being are key factors in their illness and recovery, along with their thoughts, beliefs and emotions. Biopsychosocial Medicine examines the concept and the utility of this approach from its history to its application, and from its philosophical underpinnings to the barriers to its implementation. It is severely critical of the failure of modern medicine to treat the patient not the disease, and its neglect of psychological and social factors in the treatment of the ill. Focusing on chronic disabling ill health, this book takes the examplesof arthritis, cancer, diabetes, lower back pain, irritable bowel syndrome and depression to show how the biopsychosocial model can be used in practice. It questions why, even when the biopsychosocial approach has been proved to be more effective than traditional methods in overcoming these disorders, is not more routinely used, and how barriers to its implementation can be overcome. Controversial and challenging, Biopsychosocial Medicine will be essential reading for all those who feel the biomedical model is failing them and their patients. It will enable readers to understand the model and how it can be implemented, in order to enhance their confidence and success as health professionals.

By:Anthony William
Published on 2015-11-10 by Hay House, Inc

Anthony William, the one and only Medical Medium, has helped tens of thousands of people heal from ailments that have been misdiagnosed or ineffectively treated or that doctors can’t resolve. He’s done this by listening to a divine voice that literally speaks into his ear, telling him what lies at the root of people’s pain or illness and what they need to do to restore their health. His methods achieve spectacular results, even for those who have spent years and many thousands of dollars on all forms of medicine before turning to him. Now, in this revolutionary book, he opens the door to all he has learned in over 25 years of bringing people’s lives back: a massive amount of healing information, much of which science won’t discover for decades, and most of which has never appeared anywhere before. Medical Medium reveals the root causes of diseases and conditions that medical communities either misunderstand or struggle to understand at all. It explores all-natural solutions for dozens of the illnesses that plague us, including Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, chronic fatigue syndrome, hormonal imbalances, Hashimoto’s disease, multiple sclerosis, depression, neurological conditions, chronic inflammation, autoimmune disease, blood sugar imbalances, colitis and other digestive disorders, and more. It also offers solutions for restoring the soul and spirit after illness has torn at our emotional fabric. Whether you’ve been given a diagnosis you don’t understand, or you have symptoms you don’t know how to name, or someone you love is sick, or you want to care for your own patients better, Medical Medium offers the answers you need. It’s also a guidebook for everyone seeking the secrets to living longer, healthier lives. |The truth about the world, ourselves, life, purpose—it all comes down to healing,| Anthony William writes. |And the truth about healing is now in your hands.|

Medicine, Rationality and Experience

Medicine, Rationality and Experience
By:Byron J. Good
Published on 1993-11-26 by Cambridge University Press

Biomedicine is often thought to provide a scientific account of the human body and of illness. In this view, non-Western and folk medical systems are regarded as systems of 'belief' and subtly discounted. This is an impoverished perspective for understanding illness and healing across cultures, one that neglects many facets of Western medical practice and obscures its kinship with healing in other traditions. Drawing on his research in several American and Middle Eastern medical settings, in this 1993 book Professor Good develops a critical, anthropological account of medical knowledge and practice. He shows how physicians and healers enter and inhabit distinctive worlds of meaning and experience. He explores how stories or illness narratives are joined with bodily experience in shaping and responding to human suffering and argues that moral and aesthetic considerations are present in routine medical practice as in other forms of healing.

Medical Nihilism

Medical Nihilism
By:Jacob Stegenga
Published on 2018-03 by Oxford University Press

Medical nihilism is the view that we should have little confidence in the effectiveness of medical interventions. This book argues that medical nihilism is a compelling view of modern medicine. If we consider the frequency of failed medical interventions, the extent of misleading evidence inmedical research, the thin theoretical basis of many interventions, and the malleability of empirical methods in medicine, and if we employ our best inductive framework, then our confidence in the effectiveness of medical interventions ought to be low. Part I articulates theoretical and conceptual groundwork, in which Jacob Stegenga offers a defence of a hybrid theory of disease, which forms the basis of a novel account of effectiveness, and applies this to pharmacological science and to issues such as medicalization. Part II critically examinesdetails of medical research. Even the very best methods in medical research, such as randomized trials and meta-analyses, are malleable and suffer from various biases. Methods of measuring the effectiveness of medical interventions systematically overestimate benefits and underestimate harms. PartIII summarizes the arguments for medical nihilism and what this position entails for medical research and practice. To evaluate medical nihilism with care, Stegenga states the argument in formal terms. Medical nihilism suggests that medical research must be modified, that clinical practice should beless aggressive in its therapeutic approaches, and that regulatory standards should be enhanced.

Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine

Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine
By:Marthe R. Gold,Joanna E. Siegel,Louise B. Russell,Milton C. Weinstein
Published on 1996-07-18 by Oxford University Press

Cost-effectiveness in health and medicine presents a consensus of experts on appropriate methods for standardizing the conduct of CEAs for use in policy arenas. Standardization is of particular importance for CEA, because it allows comparisons of the costs and health outcomes of alternative methods of improving health, such as public health programs and medical technologies. The book provides a detailed discussion of the theoretical background underlying areas of controversy, and uses theory to guide explicit recommendations for study conduct.

Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home. “Beautiful and propulsive . . . Despite the singularity of [Tara Westover’s] childhood, the questions her book poses are universal: How much of ourselves should we give to those we love? And how much must we betray them to grow up?”—Vogue “Westover has somehow managed not only to capture her unsurpassably exceptional upbringing, but to make her current situation seem not so exceptional at all, and resonant for many others.”—The New York Times Book Review

Concepts in Medical Physiology

Concepts in Medical Physiology
By:Julian Seifter,David Sloane,Austin Ratner
Published on 2005 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins

Written through a collaboration of expert faculty and medical students from Harvard Medical School, this innovative text delivers a straightforward and clear overview of the major principles, agents, and processes governing human physiology. Emphasis is on understanding the higher-order processes in each organ system. Concepts in Medical Physiology avoids long lists of unprioritized information and undefined jargon by presenting fresh concept diagrams and figures alongside clear explanations of quantitative concepts. It can function equally well as a primary resource or as a review. Eight major sections, comprising a total of 36 chapters, cover general principles, muscle and bone, blood and the immune system, cardiovascular physiology, pulmonary physiology, renal physiology, gastrointestinal physiology, and endocrine physiology. Many useful features simplify mastery of difficult concepts: Case studies for each major section present detailed cases with signs and symptoms, history, and laboratory data. Questions at the conclusion of each case reinforce important clinical concepts. Reviews of cell biology, basic science, and biochemistry refresh students on the foundations of physiological knowledge. Clinical Application boxes draw the connection between physiology to practical issues students face and help with preparation for the USMLE. Pathophysiology sections are featured in every chapter. Review questions with answers in each chapter aid in preparation for the examination. Integrative Physiology inserts highlight how specific systems, organs, and tissues work together. More than 350 illustrations aid with visual learning, including original schematic diagrams, photos, and tables. Concept-focused summaries conclude each chapter for more effective learning and review. Suggested readings in every chapter provide a valuable resource for further investigation in physiological and clinical ideas.

Feminist Perspectives in Medical Ethics

Feminist Perspectives in Medical Ethics

|... a welcome addition to the literature.| —Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences |... ideologically diverse selection of readings... |—Times Literary Supplement (London) |The essays are balanced, challenging, well-argued, and well-written. They ably and accessibly represent feminist contributions to medical ethics... |Â —Religious Studies Review |... fascinating... thought-provoking... | —Nursing Times |A stimulating book for those women and men (feminist and non-feminist) interested in medical ethics.| —Maternal and Child Health |... landmark [event] in bioethics... |Â —Women & Health The aim of this volume is to show how a feminist perspective advances biomedical ethics by uncovering inconsistencies in traditional argument and by arguing for the importance of hitherto ignored factors in decision making. These essays include both theory and very specific examples that demonstrate the glaring inadequacy of mainstream medical ethics.

Medicine and Western Civilization

Medicine and Western Civilization
By:David J. Rothman,Steven Marcus,Stephanie A. Kiceluk
Published on 1995 by Rutgers University Press

This fabulous anthology is sure to be a core text for history of medicine and social science classes in colleges across the country. In order to demonstrate how medical research has influenced Western cultural perspectives, the editors have collected original works from 61 different authors around nine major themes (among them |Anatomy and Destiny,| |Psyche and Soma,| and |The Construction of Pain, Suffering, and Death|). The authors range from Aristotle, the Bible, and Louis Pasteur, to Masters and Johnson, Ernest Hemingway, and Simone de Beauvoir. The primary sources selected to illustrate the themes are well chosen and contrast with each other nicely. However, the brief background material for the selections center around the authors and offer little or no discussion about the selections' relevance to the topics at hand. This book would be best read in a class or group where the texts' meaning in relation to each other can be discussed, but the book can stand alone if the reader is prepared to do some critical thinking.

Routledge Handbook of the Medical Humanities

Routledge Handbook of the Medical Humanities
By:Bleakley Alan
Published on 2019-08-20 by Routledge

The medical humanities have moved into an exciting era of interdisciplinary cross-currents, exchanges and debates that embrace the academic study of medical culture, competing notions of health and illness, public engagement with medicine, contemporary arts taking medical themes as a stimulus for provocative work, and new readings of the more traditional ''primal scene'' of the doctor-patient relationship. This magisterial new Handbookoffers a comprehensive and cutting-edge overview of the state of the medical humanities globally, showing how clinically-oriented medical humanities, the critical study of medicine as a global historical and cultural phenomenon, and medicine as a force for cultural change can intersect and inform each other. Comprised of seven parts, this Handbooklooks at the medical humanities as: a network and system therapeutic provocation forms of resistance a way of reconceptualising the medical curriculum concerned with performance and narrative mediated by artists as diagnosticians of culture and public engagement Further developing our sense of what medical humanities can and does encompass, the Routledge Handbook of the Medical Humanitiesdescribes how the medical humanities can be put to work in and out of clinical settings, acting as a point of resistance, redistributing medicine''s capital amongst its stakeholders, embracing the complexity of medical instances, shaping medical education, promoting interdisciplinary understandings and recognising an identity for the medical humanities as a network effect. It pays attention to how the arts, humanities and liberal social sciences provide frames of reference that encourage imaginatively about typical clinical issues, such as diagnostic thinking and the consultation, and about wider issues such as the loose way in which descriptors such as ''health'', ''wellbeing'', ''illness'', ''pathology'' are used, carrying value judgements. At one and the same time, it explores how the clinical encounter, the education of doctors including identity constructions, and the study of medical cultures, could be interlinked for interdisciplinary inquiry. This book is an essential read for all students, scholars and practitioners with an interest in the medical humanities. p;lt;LI\u003etherapeutic provocation forms of resistance a way of reconceptualising the medical curriculum concerned with performance and narrative mediated by artists as diagnosticians of culture and public engagement Further developing our sense of what medical humanities can and does encompass, the Routledge Handbook of the Medical Humanitiesdescribes how the medical humanities can be put to work in and out of clinical settings, acting as a point of resistance, redistributing medicine''s capital amongst its stakeholders, embracing the complexity of medical instances, shaping medical education, promoting interdisciplinary understandings and recognising an identity for the medical humanities as a network effect. The text gives particular emphasis to the roles of Booker T. Washington, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Lyndon Johnson and Jesse Jackson, with an expanded feature on radicals in the 1960s, analysing their aims, methods and achievements. Physicians of Western Medicine

Physicians of Western Medicine
By:Robert A. Hahn,Atwood D. Gaines
Published on 1984-12-31 by Springer Science & Business Media

After putting down this weighty (in all senses of the word) collection, the reader, be she or he physician or social scientist, will (or at least should) feel uncomfortable about her or his taken-for-granted commonsense (therefore cultural) understanding of medicine. The editors and their collaborators show the medical leviathan, warts and all, for what it is: changing, pluralistic, problematic, powerful, provocative. What medicine proclaims itself to be - unified, scientific, biological and not social, non-judgmental - it is shown not to resemble very much. Those matters about which medicine keeps fairly silent, it turns out, come closer to being central to its clinical practice - managing errors and learning to conduct a shared moral dis course about mistakes, handling issues of competence and competition among biomedical practitioners, practicing in value-laden contexts on problems for which social science is a more relevant knowledge base than biological science, integrating folk and scientific models of illness in clinical communication, among a large number of highly pertinent ethnographic insights that illuminate medicine in the chapters that follow.

Medicine and the Five Senses

Medicine and the Five Senses
By:William F. Bynum,Roy Porter
Published on 1993-02-26 by Cambridge University Press

Doctors must use their five senses in their daily practice, especially in diagnosing disease. Many of the essays in this illustrated collection focus on the diagnostic setting, from the Greek physicians to CAT scanners, and on the ways in which medical education has attempted to train doctors to use their senses. Other essays explore the wider presentation of medicine, anatomy, and disease, through the visual arts and the media. They demonstrate the extent to which medicine is a visual activity, but do not neglect the other senses, as well as historical preoccupations with the role of reason in the doctor's life.

The Medical Renaissance of the Sixteenth Century

The Medical Renaissance of the Sixteenth Century
By:A. Wear,R. K. French,I. M. Lonie
Published on 1985-03-07 by Cambridge University Press

This book examines the relationship of medicine to those intellectual and social changes which historians call the Renaissance. The contributors describe how the whole range of medicine, from practical therapeutics to surgery, anatomy and pharmacy, was developing. Some important questions about the nature of medicine as it was taught and practised are raised. These include the continuing vigour of Arabic and scholastic medicine, how this was reconciled with the renaissance love of all things Greek and the nature of medicine in different parts of Europe. The chapters are written by acknowledged experts in their subjects and are based on contributions read at a meeting called for the purpose in Cambridge and supported by the Wellcome Trust.
